The namers of black metal are Venom, but they themselves are NWOBHM/thrash/speed metal
Most people agree that either Bathory, Celtic Frost, Mayhem, Burzum, or Possessed was the first black metal band. However, Bathory claims to have heard Venom's second album "Black Metal" only after releasing their first album release. The "style" of black metallish Satanic lyrics, unconventional song structures was induced by Bathory. Mayhem and Burzum were the first True Norwegian Black Metal band. Which in black metal circles is an important distinction, considering that the black metal from Norway is usually superior in quality then that of Sweden, Germany, France, or god forbid, America
It all depends on how far back you want to go, but Mayhem is a very good answer to this question. As are any of the above mentioned bands

∙ 13y agoNo particular person started heavy metal, rather, certain bands inspired it. Heavy metal evolved from blues rock and psychedelic rock. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Deep Purple laid down the groundwork for heavy metal, however, they themselves are not heavy metal. The first band to be considered heavy metal even today is Black Sabbath, who released their first album in 1970.

∙ 11y agoIt's not really debatable. Bathory were the first to play legitimate black metal. Venom played sloppy speed metal and Mercyful Fate only had the look but the music itself was more heavy metal. Other significant contributors were bands like Sarcofago, Treblinka, Mortuary Drape, Grotesque, Morbid, Merciless, Blasphemy and even to some degree, the early works of Paul Ledney (Profanatica, Crowned In Semen, Abomination)
Bands that influenced the black metal sound but were not black metal bands: Slayer, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, Venom, etc....
