The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb to shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of confession and doing penance. During the week before Lent, sometimes called Shrovetide in English, Christians were expected to go to confession in preparation for the penitential season of turning to God. Shrove Tuesday was the last day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, and noted in histories dating back to 1000 AD. The popular celebratory aspect of the day had developed long before the Protestant Reformation, and was associated with releasing high spirits before the somber season of Lent.

Shrove Tuesday is part of the time leading up to the Day of Easter, when Christians recognize and celebrate the crucifiction of Christ for our sins. Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, is considered our last chance to eat, drink, and be merry, because the next day we must begin fasting. Of course, not all Christians feel obligated to fast at this time. It is recommended for those who wish to participate as fully as possible in the Easter seasonal events.

This is the Lenten season, when fasting is the word of the day. The practice of fasting is an individual choice, and not required of anyone. The Lenten season lasts for about a month, if memory serves correctly, and ends with the celebration on the day of Easter.

This coming Sunday is called Palm Sunday, celebrating Jesus' triumphal entry into the City of Jerusalem, when the people lined the streets with palm branches. The following week is called Holy Week, and the solemn services follow events in the life of Jesus leading up to his crucifiction and death on the cross. It is critical to all Christians that Jesus died for us on the cross, to take away our sins so that we may have eternal life. The only other Christian event that is as important as the Easter crucifiction is the Christmas birth of Christ.
