1. Originally the Northerners infiltrated into RVN from the north to the south; the DMZ put a stop to that.

2. Water-craft traffic moved by infiltration along the South Viet coastline (as well as inland waterways); the USN's Swift Boats (PCF-Parol Craft Fast) just about put them out of business there.

3. Last but not least was the network of trails and roads traversing thru Laos/Cambodia; the Ho Chi Minh Trail. That network was bombed into a lunar landscape. But it never was completely put out of business. The "Trail" remained the North's most potent means of re-supplying it's forces in the south.

Contrary to popular opinion, the most commonly encountered small arms were the Chicom (Chinese Communist) AK-47s and SKS rifles and not Soviet (Russian) built AKs and SKS weapons. Chicom small arms, trucks, and T59 versions of Soviet PT76 and T54/55 tanks far outnumbered Soviet supplied tanks. The USSR initially supplied the North Viet Air Force with MiG17s, then later stopped shipping them to North Vietnam and only supplied them with MiG21s. Red China picked up the slack from the Soviets (Russians) and supplied North Vietnam with their version of the MiG17 (the J5 series). The only MiG19 (a twin engine jet) in the North Vietnamese Air Force inventory was supplied to them by the Communist Chinese, the Chicom J6 (Chinese Communist version of the Russian MiG19). The USSR supplied the vast majority of radar systems and SAMs. Soviet block nations also contributed with small arms and ammunition. NVA uniforms and helmets were manufactured in North Vietnam. P4 & P6 Torpedo boats for the North Viet Navy were supplied by both the USSR & Red China. It was the P4 boats that made the attack on the USN in the Tonkin Gulf (Tonkin Gulf Incident).

Originally via the river systems and the Ho Chi Minh trail. After the US Navy's riverine forces (Swift Boats, etc.) put a strangle hold on the water ways, the HCM trail remained the primary supply channel.

Although it is true that US Generals stated that US forces were never defeated on the battlefield and this statement has been accepted by most websites (Vietnam Statistics for example); its also true that that statement is not 100% correct. Many US ground actions resulted in a retreat and/or an abandonment of the field; See K. W. Nolan's book "INTO LAOs" the US Army's last major offensive of the Vietnam War in 1971 as one example.

On the other hand the statement "weapons (used to)...defeat the US..." would also not be an accurate statement.

The Chinese Communists (Chicom/Red China)/USSR/Warsaw Pact nations all supplied small arms (AK47s, etc.) and equipage to North Vietnam. The USSR supplied PT76 & T-54 tanks, MiG17 & MiG21s, plus SAMs and associated radar sets. Red China supplied MiG19s (their Chicom J6 versions) and MiG17s (Chicom J5 versions), as well as their Chicom T63 & T59 tanks (Chicom versions of the PT76 & T54 tanks). Both nations also supplied the North Viet Navy with P4 torpedo boats which clashed with the US destroyer USS Maddox in the Tonkin Gulf in '64. By far the most equipment...AKs, SKS, machine guns, trucks, mortars, etc. encountered by the allies in RVN (Republic of South Vietnam) were Chicom.

What weapons did the south vietnamese use in the Vietnam war?

Vietnamese were divided into two (or more) groups during the war. The North Vietnamese, regular army, used some of the same conventional weapons (ships, machine guns, tanks, planes, long range guns) as did the US... only they had very much fewer of them. The Viet Cong (VC), which were the Communist rebels which eventually took over South Vietnam, used more small scale weapons and weapons of secrecy, hidden bombs, more small arms fire and the like, as their number one weapon was secrecy and moving around quietly, while hiding in the bush often, to catch their enemy...the US and South Vietnamese troops off guard.

What support did the Vietcong get?

All the support the North Vietnamese could give them and they were supplied by the Soviets in their turn. After 1969/70 the Viet Cong were all but eliminated as a fighting force and the NVA was infiltrated into the South by the Ho Chi Min trail, men and supplies. This does not take into account all the support that some people of South Vietnam gave the Viet Cong.

Details of the vietcong soilders?

The Vietcong (VC) were NOT regular soldiers as employed by the regular army of North Vietnam during the war. Generally speaking, the VC were guerillas/insurgents, although they did at times operate as organized military units. The VC were normally Vietnamese civilians who lived in SOUTH VIETNAM, but were communists who fought against the South Vietnamese army and it's government. The VC were often civilians by day and soldiers by night. Seldom wearing uniforms, and armed with whatever weapons they could attain. They were, when possible, armed with weapons and equipment from North Vietnam, Communist China and the Soviet Union. As with most armies during war time, they also used captured enemy (US) weapons and equipment when they could obtain them. The VC, for the most part, were effectively eliminated as an organized force during the TET offensive of 1968. With most of the Vietnam War being fought by the North Vietnamese Army against US and alled forces, from 1968 onward.
