This question has been discussed by Bible scholars since the first century AD. The Bible is not definitive on this topic. Perhaps the two best modern discussions are given in the Catholic Encyclopedia and in a book by C. P. Thiede. Among those proposed are Matthias, Luke, Symeon, and Mary, the wife of Clopas, mentioned in John 19:25. In this writer's opinion, the most satisfactory answer is that Cleopas and Clopas are the same person and the other person is Mary, his wife.

ANSWER

It must be remembered that the word "disciple" actually means "follower" "Cleopas" is a Greek name, shortenedfrom "Cleopater", while "Cleophas" , or "Clopas" as in the Revised Version, is an Aramaic name, the same as "Alphaeus" . But which Cleopas?

  • Cleophas - one of the two disciples with whom Jesus talked with on the way to Emmaus on the day of the resurrection (Luk_24:18). This particular Cleophas was .
DEFINITELY a disciple

[However, it's not known for certain ifthis Clophaswas also the "Alphaeus" of Mat_10:3, or the "Alphaeus" of Mark 2:14.]

  • Alphaeus (The Hebrew form of " Cleopas", or Clopas") The father of James the Less [ the apostle and writer of the epistle] and the husband of Mary/Salome
PROBABLY a disciple
  • Alphaeus The father of Levi, that is Matthew the disciple. Matthew was the Son of Alphaeus [Clophas aka Clopas] It is not known if this Alphaeus's wife was Salome or not.
(If his wife was Salome, this meant she was the sister of Jesus'mother Mary, [thus making her Jesus' Aunt and this Alphaeus Jesus'Uncle], she was also the mother of the James and John [the two sons of Zebedee], [making James and John the cousins of Jesus], and thus making Matthew's father Alphaeus PROBABLY a disciple. However, if his wife was not Salome then Matthew's father was POSSIBLY a disciple: take your pick).

However, there may have been two separate men named Alphaeus. Though both Matthew and James are described as being the "son of Alphaeus" there is no Biblical account of the two being called brothers, even in the same context where John and James or Peter and Andrew are described as being brothers.

The only Cleophas [aka Alphaeus] we definitely know to be a disciple is the one Jesus met on the road to Emmaus. However, all of them probably were because I personally think that Jesus would not have chosen certain men to be His main disciples without first ensuring that their parents were also as this was especially important in a patriachal society.
