Alessandro Volta was an Italian physicist (1745 - 1827) who invented the first electric battery (also known as the voltaic pile battery) in 1799. His work is still remembered today through the use of his family name Volta, which is used in the electrical term Volt.

Alessandro Volta's father died when he was 7 and he was raised by his uncle. He was in Jesuit boarding school for a time but he did not want to become a priest. His uncle wanted him to become a lawyer but he chose to become a scientist. In 1778, Volta was appointed to the Chair of Experimental Physics at the University of Pavia.
