Siddhartha Gautama, otherwise known as Buddha, was a wealthy prince whose father had heard a prediction for the young boy's future of either becoming a great leader in the political/royal sense or a religious/philosophical leader. His father feared that his child might grow up to choose the second choice and decided to limit his son's exposure to things that might lead him away from his royal life.
Buddhism is the philosophy/religion based around the Buddha's teachings of the four noble truths and the eightfold path. By practicing in a very deliberate and conscious manner one is supposed to be able to attain enlightenment. Buddhism can be both a philosophy and a religion. There is no god in the original form of Buddhism, but from cultural influences, worshiping practices have been integrated into many forms of Buddhism.
