Who was Dr Dorothy B Ferebee?

Dr Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee [October 10, 1898-September 14, 1980] was an African-American physicist at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was born in the coastal Virginia town of Norfolk. But she obtained her later education in Massachusetts, where her great aunt lived. Specifically, she received her undergraduate degree from Simmons College, and her medical degree from Tufts University.

With her education, she helped set up the Southeast Neighborhood House in the federal capital. The building pioneered medical care and community services to the African-American population of the area. She then became the Mississippi Health Project's first medical director. The organization provided medical care in some of the most impoverished and inaccessible areas of the Deep South. She went on to become the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s tenth International President, 1939-1941. She then served as Howard University Medical School health services director, 1949-1968. During that time, she also served as second president of the National Council of Negro Women, 1949-1953. In 1953, she was honored as the first recipient of Simmons College's Alumnae Achievement Award.

In 1930, she married Claude Thurston Ferebee. Her husband pursued a career as a dentist and Howard University College of Dentistry professor. They had two children, fraternal twins whom they named Dorothy and Claude Jr.
