InuYasha is a character created by Rumiko Takahashi, who wrote a manga series around him. Later, that manga was turned into a series of animated episodes and four movies, though the manga and the animated versions are somewhat different from each other.

InuYasha himself is a creature that is based on the legends and myths of Japan. Supernatural creatures and monsters are called "youkai" there. The word youkai means "that thing that I don't understand". InuYasha's father was a dog youkai, and his mother was a human woman. That means that he is a hybrid or "hanyou" The word hanyou means "half youkai"

According to the movies only, InuYasha is 150 years old, or ten times the age of Kagome. He was born on the night of a lunar eclipse during winter. Physically, he appears to be about 15 to 17 years of age. This means he ages very slowly.

His height is difficult to determine, since it changed during the course of the manga.

He has long silver-white hair, ivory colored claws, fangs, cat-like gold eyes with vertical slits, and triangular, upright dog's ears that are similar to those of a Japanese Akita Inu. These are all traits he inherited from his father.

On just twelve nights of the year, his youkai features fade and he becomes human in appearance. At those times, he has black hair. InuYasha doesn't like being a human for the most part. At one time, he was willing to let a priestess "purify" him, which would have made him all human with a normal human life span, but an evil monster named Naraku tricked him and killed the priestess before the transformation could be performed.

InuYasha's name has a complex meaning. The first part, "Inu", means "dog" in Japanese. The second part, "Yasha", might refer to a creature of Buddhist mythology that has a complex history. Rumiko Takahashi also once said that she used "Yasha" because some street gangs used it as part of their group name to make them sound tough. She wanted InuYasha to be a "street thug" in character, so she gave him that name.

InuYasha has one older brother who is named Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru is a pure-blooded youkai whose father and mother were both youkai. InuYasha and Sesshomaru share a father, but have different mothers.

In times when InuYasha has fallen in battle and he is near death, his wild youkai blood will attempt to protect him by suppressing all his human blood. When this happens, InuYasha is flooded by the power and the joy of being full youkai. However, it is almost impossible for him to control himself during those times, and in the manga, he murders some bandits who were begging for their lives. Later, when he recovers and his youkai blood subsides, he is stricken with guilt for the destruction his evil side has caused. His father knew this was going to be a problem for his halfblooded son, so he created the sword "Tetsusaiga" by having the swordsmith Toutousai forge a blade from one of his own fangs.

(Though written out as "Tetsusaiga", the name of the sword is properly pronounced as "Tessaiga", since in the original Japanese, the "tsu" part should be silent.)

The Tessaiga is a mighty sword whose main function is to protect the human side of InuYasha. It does this by helping him keep his youkai side in check.
