Elizabeth 1 (Tudor, daughter of Henry 8) was queen. The numbering of the current Elizabeth caused some controversy in Scotland at the time of Elizabeth 2's accession since there was never an Elizabeth 1 in Scotland. Elizabeth I died in 1603, so the queen during the last 13 years of Shakespeare's life was Anne of Denmark, the wife of King James I (who also has a different number in Scotland where he was King James VI)

Two women: Elizabeth Tudor and Anne of Denmark. Elizabeth was the Queen because her father (Henry VIII) was the king. Anne was the Queen because her husband (James I of England and VI of Scotland) was the king.

Queen Elizabeth I was Queen at the time of Shakespeare's birth and died when he was about 37. After her death, and for the last 15 years of Shakespeare's life, Anne of Denmark, James I's wife, was queen. She died about 3 years after Shakespeare did, in 1619
