Robert E. Lee is best remembered as the commander(leader) of the Confederate army during the Civil War. As a young man, he attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was involved in the War with Mexico. Interestingly, President Lincoln offered Lee a field command in the U.S. Army when the Civil War broke out. Although Lee opposed slavery and the idea of secession, he felt that his allegiance belonged to his family, friends, and state. He declined the President's offer, resigned his commission in the U.S. Army, and returned to his plantation in Virginia. He surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865. He was born in Stratford, Westmoreland County, Virginia on January 19, 1807. He died in Lexington, Virginia on October 12, 1870.

Lee is a very controversial figure. For some, he was an honorable man and is one of the great tragic heroes of all times. To others, he was considered a traitor, a slave owner who brutally treated his slaves. What is certain is that Lee was a brilliant general who paid for his involvement with the Confederacy by losing his property as well as his United States citizenship which was only restored posthumously to him in 1975.

He was the regular army Colonel who put down John Brown's rebellion.

His wife was related to George Washington.

He was a Virginian who disapproved of secession.

When Virginia seceded, he asked the General-in-Chief if he could stay neutral. (The General replied "No, we don't want any fence-sitters.") So he reluctantly resigned his commission and joined the Confederates.

He took over the Army of Northern Virginia when it was almost in Richmond and drove it to the end of the Peninsula.

His triumphs were the result of teamwork with Stonewall Jackson. When Jackson was killed, neither Lee nor his army was ever the same again. His health started to fail from that time, probably not coincidence.

He was rather insincere about his disapproval of slavery. He had inherited many slaves from his father-in-law and sometimes beat them into subservience. He declared that slavery was an evil, which the Almighty would bring to an end when He saw fit. It is hard to credit that he actually believed this.

Of all the leading Confederates, Lee was the one who most embodied its soul and spirit - an aristocratic planter of dignity and honour, inspiring fanatical loyalty in his men, who followed him till they were barefoot and starving.
