Toussaint L'Ouverture [or Louverture], (1743-1803) was an early and important leader of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), which cast off French domination of the colony of Saint-Dominique (Haiti). He also extended the revolt to the part of the island then under Spanish rule - now the Dominican Republic.
The slaves in Haiti succeeded in gaining independence from France. But Toussaint L'Ouverture was captured by the French and died while under interrogation in prison in France.
He was the first black general in a European army (French) and is arguably the most influential black person of all time leading this most successful slave rebellion in history.
In 1792, Toussaint joined forces with Spain, he was called "Physician to the armies of the king" because of his knowledge of herbal medicine.
When the convention government in Paris abolished slavery in 1794, Toussiant felt that he had to join the French republican forces in the west.
Toussaint was known abroad and he won the friendship and he won the friendship and support of the US in 1795, and the president in 1797.
Toussaint soon became the real leader of the French forces. By 1798 the British were in a desperate position, as a result of disease and Toussaint's attack.
The British would withdraw from St. Domingue (Haiti today), it Toussaint would agree to protect the French inhabitants, refrain from attacking British trade and trying to spread the revolution to Jamaica. Toussaint himself kept the terms honorably.
He made himself Governor-General for life with the right to nominate his successor.
All in all his job was to unsure that slavery was abolished.

The success of the Slave Revolt in Haiti soured Napoleon's interest in a New World Empire and besides he needed cash to continue his war in Europe.
He died in 1804, of cold and starvation in the dungeon of the fortress of Fort-de-Joux, in the French Jura mountains (in Doubs, eastern France).
"I was born a slave, but nature gave me a soul of a free man….""In overthrowing me, you have done no more than cut down the trunk of the tree of the black liberty in St-Domingue-it will spring back form the roots, for they are numerous and deep.Toussaint L' Ouverture"My decision to destroy the authority of the blacks in Saint Domingue (Haiti) is not so much based on considerations of commerce and money, as on the need to block for ever the march of the blacks in the world.""In overthrowing me, you have done no more than cut down the trunk of the tree of the black liberty in St-Domingue-it will spring back form the roots, for they are numerous and deep."The second quote needs to be properly attributed to Napoleon. It is just left there as if it is something Toussaint said. Is this site trying intentionally to obfuscate the history of Haiti? ---rashard zanders@gmx.com
