Best Answer

Tupia was a Tahitian man who was taken aboard Captain James Cook's HM Bark 'Endeavour', by the botanist Sir Joseph Banks, Baronet. Banks meant to keep him as a sort of prisoner guest in England it seems. Tupia's knowledge of navigation, his linguistic and diplomacy skills seem to have been of immense use to Cook in Polynesia. Tupia died at Batavia (Jakarta) before Endeavour left the Southern Hemisphere.
