William Shakespeare was an English playwright and poet, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.

Thousands of his new words and phrases are commonly used in spoken English today. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard").

His plays are regularly performed at the Royal Shakespeare Theater in his birthplace of Stratford-on-Avon.
His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems.
His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
William Shakespeare lived in the days of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He was assumed to be born on April 26, 1564 and died in 1616.
Some of his better known works include Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth.
