Personal account from a FAQ Farmer
When I arrived in Laredo, Texas in 1975 it was like living in the 20's or maybe in the late 1800's. Mayor Martin had managed through out the years to rip off all the people who lived here. There were no paved streets. No sidewalks, no gutters, and in some places no development at all. There were very few businesses here. There was one International Bridge. This was not normal for any city or town. He was under investigation by citizens that were not from Laredo and saw the corruption. The Texas Rangers got involved and assisted in the investigation. Any small town near by including, Hebberonville, Freer, San Diego, Falfurrias even Premont or Alice had better city organization than Laredo did. It was the 'good ole' boy system that was still in place and everyone here let it happened. I guess they thought that was the way all cities or towns were. Laredo, was caught in the past and did not even have a clue. The Mayor even had Laredo High School renamed after his family - Martin High School. After he was arrested and taken to the valley - everything began to change. It was a shame. People here just stuck in the past never questioning his authority. Most all of the city equipment was located at his ranch - where by the way all the roads were paved courtesy of the Laredo tax payer. Meanwhile everyone who lived in the city had dirt roads. Can you believe they never changed the High School back to the original Laredo High School? Thats how much these people like him! Unbelievable! Laredo has come a very long way. Thank God, that man is long gone. Go through the Laredo Times and read what a thief that man was (1975-1976).
