Norman Rockwell accomplished much through his artwork but he also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 (Highest award for a civilian). In my opinion his "achievements" were not the amount of pieces of artwork (>4000) or the awards but the impact that he had on America and other artists. He captured controversial American topics in a snapshot (like civil rights) as well as everyday life

Norman Rockwell (1894 - 1978) was a Famous American illustrator, perhaps the most famous illustrator in the world.
When he was 20 he was hired by the magazine "Saturday Evening Post" (1916) for which he worked for 47 years (until 1963) and made 317 magazine covers for it which were and still are immensely popular (e.g. posters). He originally painted in oil (mostly oil on canvas, board or paper), with preliminary pencil sketches on paper. There still exist today many original signed lithographs and of course the original paintings, too.

In a time without TV where the moving images (the cinema) and more generally images were appearing everywhere, Rockwell contributed to shape the mind of a Nation with realistic scenes of common Americans. His scene are full of humor, wit, positive attitude and truth. Thus, the Christmas scenes we all "see" and think of today, for instance, have been gradually building up also because of Rockwell illustrations.

His work was never considered art until recently. His original oil paintings have fetched high prices: for instance "Breaking Home Ties" was sold for over $15 mio in a Sothebys auction in New York in 2006. Other works reach thousands and hundred of thousands of dollars. Collectors are Hollywood stars, too. Not a surprise. Figurines and plates made after his images are also highly popular collector pieces. Rockwell represent a portion of US History, perhaps the better one; certainly a world which largely does not exist anymore.
