Field Marshal Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis

In August 1942 Winston Churchill sent General Alexander, as Commander-in-Chief Middle East, to command the forces in North Africa. Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery served under him as General Officer Commanding Eighth Army. He replaced General Claude Auchinleck who had held both positions. Gen. Alexander presided over Montgomery's victory at the Second Battle of El Alamein.
