At the Constitutional Convention, Gouverneur Morris of Pennsylvania was put in charge of the committee to draft the final copy of the United States Constitution. Jacob Shallus, assistant clerk of the Pennsylvania State Assemble, was given the task of engrossing the Constitution prior to the signing of the document. His office was in the same building in which the Convention was held.

James Maddison is the father of the Constitution. He wrote it down. Thomas Jefferson was not even at the Constitutional Convention. He was in Paris, France at the time it was written.

On September 17, 1787, forty-two of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting. It was signed on Monday, 17 September 1787.
