During the American Revolutionary War, the American naval vessel, "Bonhomme Richard", was captained by John Paul Jones. Already an acclaimed military leader, Jones led the "Bonhomme Richard" and other vessels against a British naval force in September of 1779. The ensuing battle provided yet one more display of Jones cool bravery under fire, one more instance where he refused to stop short of victory, and one more victory itself.
