Lt. Col Joseph Edward Kelly was commander at some point during the African campaign.

On 19 November 1942, the 175th Field Artillery Battalion entered combat with the British 78th Division at Medjez-el-Bab, Tunisia. This was the first American unit to enter combat against the German army (except for special commando raids).
