To begin with the concept of KERALA as a single geographic and political unit is of very recent origin. Before the States reorganization of 1956, Kerala was mainly considered to be of three parts. Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar. Even in historic times you had different kings in the same area. for example in what is now referred to as travancore, you had venad kingdom, them king of pandalam and kayamkulam etc There was never a king of Kerala because Kerala never existed as a kingdom
