First Hispanic World Heavyweight Champ

While not considered the true heavyweight champion, John Ruiz won one of the 3 major belts in march on 2001. John Ruiz defeated Evander Holyfield for the WBA title in a 12 round decision.

Ruiz defended his title twice against holyfield in a rematch and Kirk Johnson.

He then lost the belt to Roy Jones Jr. in 2003.

Ruiz then regained the title when Jones relinquished it in order to move back down to light heavyweight. Ruiz defeated former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman for the vacant WBA title and currently is still the reigning WBA champion.

Vitaly Klitschko and Chris Byrd hold the other 2 belts, which are the IBF and WBC.
