Samuel Nicholas was the First Commandant of the Marine Corps. He along with Robert Mullen created the Marine Corps
From 1775 to the present (January 2010), there have been 34 Commandants of the Marine Corps. The first Commandant of the Marine Corps was Samuel Nichols. Some consider it to have been Archibald Sommers who was the first Sergeant Major in the Marine Corp and received that rank on 1 January 1801. The first to hold the billet of Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps was Wilbur Bestwick from 23 May 1957 until 31 August 1959.
Brigadier General Archibald Henderson who held the position of Commandant of the Marine Corps for 38 years and served in the Corps for 53 years. He lived in the same house for 38 years at the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington DC that he forgot that it was property of the US Government and willed it to his heirs.

Alexander A. Vandergrift was the second Commandant to win the Medal of Honor (at Guadalcanal) ane the third was David M. Shoup as a Colonel at Tarawa.
