While this depends somewhat on how one defines the term missionary, the first Christian that appeared to take on the missionary role was Philip the Evangelist. He was first mentioned in Acts 6:5 in The Bible. However, his missionary travels are described in Acts 8:5-40. He served in the first decades of the church in the 1st century AD.

If the question is "Who is the Father of the Modern Missionary Movement?", then the answer is William Carey. He left Great Britain around 1792 and served in British and Danish India (Calcutta and Serampore) for approximately 40 years. The first person in the Christian church that took on the role of a cross-cultural missionary was the Deacon Philip. You can read about him in Acts.
He made Christianity the state religion, he favoured Christian soldiers, he gave large sums of money to the church, and he rebuilt churches that were destroyed in the great persecution

From a broad perspective, a Christian missionary seeks to follow the calling of Christ as described in the Great Commissions (such as Matthew 28:19-21, and John 20:21). How this is applied depends on the specific needs of the community and the special skill sets of the missionary. 1. Where the Local Church IS NOT. Missionaries are primarily pioneers. They are focused on proselytizing (converting) and planting churches. This may also include specialized roles like Bible translation and logistical support. 2. Where the Local Church HAS NOT. Where there is a viable local church, missionaries may still serve to help to train and build up these local churches. The goal would be to import tangible and intangible resources to these churches to carry on these tasks. Such roles may include Christian education, medical care, counseling, mission mobilization, and more. 3. Where the Local Church CANNOT. Certain ministries have costs or specializations that make it impossible (or challenging) in the forseeable future for the local church to take over. In these cases missionaries may serve for a longer period of time. Some of these roles may include Christian radio, orphanages, missions hospitals, and more.
It is really not known if King Arthur was a Christian. The Catholic Church did have missionaries that were in Great Britain, so it is possible that he became one.
