There is evidence, but no conclusive proof that an Englishman by the name of George Mallory and partner Andrew Irvivine reached the summit in 1924. Mallory and Irvine were last sighted from teir base camp just short of the summit and looked certain to make it. They never returned from that climb so there can be no conclusive proof. George Mallory's frozen remains were discovered on Everest on May 2, 1999, 75 years after his disappearance. His body remains on Everest where it was found.
This means that the 29th May, 1953 summit by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay (who reached the top together) is recognised as the first time the peak was conquered.
