∙ 13y agoThe Pulitzer Prizes (plural) were first awarded in 1917, the result of a bequest from Joseph Pulitzer's estate. Four Prizes were given that year, one to a trio of women for their biography of Julia Ward Howe. The book was primarily written by Laura E. Richards and Maude Howe Elliott with assistance from Florence Howe Hall (Publisher: Houghton)
Julie Ward Howe (1819-1910) was an abolitionist and author of the famous Civil War anthem, Battle Hymn of the Republic.
