Mona van Duyn was the first person to hold the title Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, in 1992-3. However, Louise Bogan held the previous version of the title, Consultant in Poetry in 1945-6.

Sara Teasdale was not only the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for her poetry, but also the first Prize recipient in that category. She was awarded the Pulitzer in 1918 for her collection, Love Songs. The Poetry Society provided a grant to support the this category in 1918-1920.
