Answer
la ilaha illah allah muhammad ur rasulalah
Answer
A simple answer is "Muhammad" started Islam.
But that's not exactly what Muslims believe.
The Islamic point of view is that Islam is God's (Allah's) favourite religion as mentioned in the holy book of Muslims ("Quran" or "Koran") and Islam has existed ever since this earth came in to being.
The word Islam in any dictionary would give you the meaning submission. It comes from the root word Salam, which means peace. So to sum it up, Islam is peace attained by submitting one's will to the Will of his Creator.
According to the Koran, Allah sent "ADAM", the father of all human beings, and "AMMA HAWWA" (Eve), the mother of all human beings.
Allah sent them Adam and Eve from Heaven to Earth as His vicegerants, to follow His Will. The Koran mentions many of the prophets including "Moses" , "Jesus", "Abraham", "Noah", and many more. The Koran says that all of the prophets were Muslims (a Muslim is "one who submits to our Creator").
The Koran also says that Christians and Jews have made assumptions about the earlier prophets, that they were Christians or Jews. But the Koran makes a clear statement that they were Muslims (again, Muslims are those who submit to their Creator).
So considering these statements in the Koran, Islam has been here since ADAM came to earth. And the Koran states that Allah revealed the final heaven-sent message (the Koran) to Muhammad and in doing so completed the religion (al Islam).
