The founders of Operation Christmas Child's concept are Dave and Jill Cooke of Wrexham, Wales. While watching a television show about Romanian orphanages on October 10, 1990, they asked themselves how they could help the children who live in poor situations day after day. Their answer was that they could offer the gift of love. They filled nine trucks with medical supplies, food, clothing and Christmas gifts for children and were off to Romania, which had recently been devastated by war. That was the beginning of the world's largest Christmas program that helps children.

Operation Christmas Child was adopted by Franklin Graham, International President of Samaritan's Purse, in 1993. Since then, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been delivered to hurting children in more than 135 countries.

Mr & Mrs. Cooke from Wales heard about the Romanian orphanages and the terrible conditions the orphans lived in. They wanted to do something for them and filled shoeboxes with toiletries, school supplies, toys, candy - within 3 years it had grown too big for them to handle and Samaritan's Purse took it over. since 1993, they have distributed more than 90 million shoeboxes to hurting children around the world. They also learn the story of Jesus and His love for them
