Castro did not play that big a role. The missiles belonged to the USSR, and were operated by Soviet soldiers. The showdown over the missiles was between the USA and the USSR more than with Cuba itself. Cuba was regarded as doing whatever the USSR told them to do.
John F. Kennedy was President in 1962. He was shown aerial photographs of a potential offensive threat of nuclear missiles in Cuba. Instead of taking serious military action, JFK inacted a "naval quarantine" in which the navy inspected all Soviet ships arriving in Cuba.
