Elena Kagan

President Obama nominated US Solicitor General Elena Kagan on May 9, 2010, to succeed Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, who retired from the Court on June 29. The Senate Judiciary Committee recommended Kagan's by a vote of 13-6; she was confirmed by a full Senate vote of 63-37 on Thursday, August 5, 2010. She took the Oaths of Office on August 7, 2010.

Kagan, who is the fourth woman to join the US Supreme Court, also increased the female census on the bench to three for the first time in history.

Former Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, a Reagan nominee who presided over the Supreme Court for more than 18 years (1986-2005), died in office in September 2005. His is the most recent death on the Court.

Rehnquist was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2004, and took a leave of absence for treatment, returning to the bench in late March 2005. He died September 3, 2005, and was buried beside his late wife, Nan, in Arlington National Cemetery.

Chief Justice Rehnquist was succeeded by the incumbent Chief Justice, John G. Roberts, Jr.

The last of 17 Chief Justices of the United States, John G. Roberts is our current Chief Justice. He was appointed by President George W. Bush, approved by the Senate, and sworn in by Senior Justice John Paul Stevens in 2005. Sworn in at age 50, Roberts became the youngest Chief Justice to serve on the Court. He replace William H. Rehnquist as Chief, becoming the first addition to the Court in 11 years.

Technically, since this question is being answered on June 21, 2010, the most recent justice to retire was David Hackett Souter, in 2009. However, Justice Stevens' planned retirement is upcoming in little more than a week, so if you're reading this after June 29, 2010, the most recent retiree is Justice John Paul Stevens.

Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, whom Republican President Gerald Ford appointed to the Supreme Court in 1975, announced his retirement on April 9, 2010, effective one day after the Court rises for summer recess (approximately July 1; exact date undetermined).

Justice Stevens is considered by many the leader of the progressive bloc of justices, and is widely respected for his keen intellect. He has been a member of the Supreme Court for more than 34 years, making him one of the longest-serving justices in the Court's history.
