William McKinley Jr. (January 29, 1843 - September 14, 1901) was the 25th President of the United States, and the last veteran of the American Civil War to be elected to the office.

By the 1880s, McKinley was a national Republican leader; his signature issue was high tariffs on imports as a formula for prosperity, as typified by his McKinley Tariff of 1890. As the Republican candidate in the 1896 presidential election, he upheld the gold standard, and promoted pluralism among ethnic groups. His campaign, designed by Mark Hanna, introduced new advertising-style campaign techniques that revolutionized campaign practices and beat back the crusading of his arch-rival, William Jennings Bryan. The 1896 election is often considered a realigning election that marked the beginning of the Progressive Era.

McKinley presided over a return to prosperity after the Panic of 1893. He launched the Spanish-American War, widely popular due to the efforts of the yellow press, using the context of Spanish atrocities in Cuba. Later he annexed the former Spanish territories of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and set up a protectorate over Cuba. He also presided over the annexation of the formerly independent Kingdom of Hawaii. McKinley was reelected in the 1900 presidential election after another intense campaign against Bryan, this one focused on foreign policy. After McKinley's assassination in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz, an American anarchist of Polish descent, he was succeeded by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt.

President: William McKinley (January 29, 1843 - September 14, 1901)

Term: March 4, 1897 - September 14, 1901

Background: McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio to William and Nancy McKinley who were Scots-Irish and English descents. At the time of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union army as a private in the 23rd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was then promoted by Rutherford B. Hayes, another future president, to commissary sergeant due to his bravery during battle. He then gained the title of Captain in September 1865. Around the year of 1869, McKinley began involving himself in politics and eventually led to him meeting his future wife Ida Saxton and marrying her 2 years later. Following this, he went to Albany Law School in Albany, New York and was then admitted to the bar in 1867. McKinley was also the 39th Governor of Ohio and was in office from January 11, 1892 to January 13, 1896.

Political Party: Republican

Vice-President: Garret A. Hobart (1897-1899), None (1899-1901), Theodore Roosevelt (1901)

Major Domestic Policy: During the election of 1896, the coinage of silver became a very prominent issue. Farmers wanted more coinage of silver in order to relieve their debt, and the elite in the east viewed unlimited coinage of silver as a bad idea. They wanted to completely use the gold standard because of fear for a depression. McKinley was then nominated by the Republicans, while the Democratic Convention were split between the gold supports and the silver supports. The gold supports left the Convention and were drawn in by William Jennings Bryan's speech "cross of gold," and lead to the Democrats declaring coinage of unlimited amount of silver. McKinley won the election by over 50% of the popular vote and electoral votes, hence the coinage of silver did not occur and bimetallism was abolished. During his Presidency, he established the McKinley tariff, which raised rates up to 48.4%. The tariff caused harm to the farmers by increasing the prices of farm equipment and caused a decline in farm prices. McKinley then ran for presidency for a second term and easily received office once again, but was shot by Leon Czolgosz at the American Exhibition in Buffalo. He then died eight days later, and Theodore Roosevelt took office.

Major Foreign Policy: During McKinley's presidency, the United States had a grand interest in Cuba. Polk was never able to purchase Cuban land from Spain from the Ostend Manifesto in the 1840's. Then, in 1898, the United States invaded Cuba due to the fact that Spanish were going against human rights and the United States were in support of the Cuban revolutionist. Also, the United States was in hopes of expanding its territory into the Pacific Ocean. The war began in Havana harbor when there was an explosion on the battleship Maine. There is still no real evidence of what the cause of the explosion was, but the journalists and press took this news and turned it into a large deal by making it look like American's were at serious harm. As a result, the Spanish-American War was declared. The war only lasted about three months, but in those months, the United States conquered the Spanish Empire and acquired the Philippines and Guam. This helped the world realize that the United States was powerful, since the defeat only took three months. This war also created a realization to the American Government that there was need for a canal in Central America. McKinley also was interested in making American producers involved in the nation market by annexing Hawaii and getting involved with China.

Court Case:

• Allgeyer v. Louisiana (1897)-Decided that the Louisiana law violated the Fourteenth Amendment's due process clause.

• United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898)-Stated that if a person was born within the United States, they could not be denied naturalization from the government.

• Champion v. Ames (1903)-Held that lottery tickets were counted as interstate commerce and was under the Commerce Clause.

• Insular Cases (1901-1979)-Established the ideas of how to be relevant the Constitution to the Islands.

Intellectual and Social Developments:

• The Countries economy rose as the Economic Depression that started in 1893 came to an end.

• The Era of farm prosperity began.

• Women began letting their voices be heard as they led social reform.

• Muckraking journalism occurred as citizens being to expose the corruption of business.

• Joshua Lionel Cowen in New York City invented the flashlight in 1898.

• The discovery of Phoebe occurred on March 17, 1899, which was an irregular satellite of Saturn discovered by William Henry Pickering.

McKinley's Legacy: McKinley was known to have been a weak president that was forced into war with Spain due to the sinking of the Maine and also of due to the public pressure. Compared to Theodore Roosevelt, McKinley suffered in evaluation. He will also be remembered for his betrayal promise towards bimetallism. McKinley was believed to have received presidency due to the fact that he was supporting bimetallism during his campaign. Once in office, he then began to support coinage of gold, causing people to not believe in him compared to during his campaign. People believe that his assassination was due to this betrayal after receiving office.
