The usual understanding is that there were only twelve apostles.

Simon (later called Peter), Andrew, James, John, Philip, Thomas, Matthew (also called Levi), James (son of Alpheus), Judas Thaddaeus, Simon, and Judas Iscariot.

Referring to thirteen apostles does sometimes occur. After Judas Iscariot committed suicide, the remaining apostles chose Matthias to replace him, but it is said that Jesus chose Saul (later called Paul) in a vision. So some say that Paul was a thirteenth apostle.

Luke 6:12-16 gives account of the choosing of the twelve apostles. The NIV version says "One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them , whom He also designated apostles: Simon (whom He named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor."

"These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon(who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him."

For whom are the epistles in the Bible named?

A:The New Testament epistles are named for the apostles in whose names they were written or the apostles the second-century Church Fathers believed to have written them. The apostles are: Paul, James, Peter, John and Jude. The apostle Paul certainly wrote some of the epistles named for him, but scholars believe that the other epistles were all written pseudepigraphically, not by the apostles whose names they now bear.
