Britain had allied itself with Belgium to protect the small country from any attacks. It is because of this country that they joined WWI. Germany crossed through Belgium and invaded France which violated Belgium Neutrality. Britain then became a part of the Triple Entente or Allied Powers, which consisted of Britain, France, and Russia. (A/N: Russia did not contribute greatly to the war because they were also fighting a civil war on their homeland - Russian Revolution)

The USA did not join the war until the last 6-7 months. The US entered the war because of unrestricted submarine warfare. The Germans had previously sunken the Lusitania by unrestricted submarine warfare, and the US did something unheard of. Normally, when the US is 'punched in the face' we punch back, however we let the Germans off with a warning. Towards the end of the war the Germans knew their demise was coming, they had little money for soldiers which resulted in little to no food, outdated technology, and hardly any ammunition. Because of their demise, they decided to start unrestricted submarine warfare again. This, combined with the German attempt to get the Mexicans to turn against the US, caused the US to join WWI.
