Sparta & Athens were similar because they both were located in Greece but Athens introduced Democracy and Sparta were important because of its army. Also Both had same religion and spoke same language.
In the Persian attack to Greece and Athes the ally of Athens were the citizens of Plataea and Spartans who failed to be present in the battle of Marathon in 490 BCE where the army of Athens defeated successfuly the Persian army.
In the second attempt in 480/ 479 BCE 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians under the leadership of Sparta's King Leonidas died in the battlefied of Thermopylae after three days of fight while the Athenian, Lakedaemon and rest of the Greek city states navy confronted the Persian one at Artemisium.
A month later the great naval battle of Salamis took place in the straights of Salamis and Attica. The Greeks defeated the Persian navy as their ships were smaller and agile while the Persian ones were large and difficalt to handle in the straights.
Athens had at its disposal 180 city-states which had been the members of the anti-Persian Delian League - when peace was made with the Persian Empire, Athens turned the League into an empire of its own, and used the resources to strive to extend that empire. These cities were mainly in Asia Minor and the Aegean Islands, the most powerful being those who provided ships to the coalition - Samos, Chios, Lemnos and Lesbos.
The majority of Athens' Allies were from Greece, mostly from the islands around Ionia and Ionia itself. There were also non-Greek allies that helped Athens. The allies included; Chios, Byzantium, Paros, Thasos, Samos, Lesbos, Naxos, Lindos, and others(They had around 300 small allies). The group was called Delian League, and it was disbanded at the end of the War(404 BCE).
Sparta also formed an alliance during the war with Elis, Tegea, Corinth, and several other states. Because of their powerful allies, Sparta gained control over the war during this time period. Later, Sparta fought against Athens and won, with the help of the Persians, even with their past bloodshed. Sparta later fought the Corinthian Wars from 396 to 387 BCE against Athens, Thebes, Corinth, and Persia as well.
