Some were put on trial; some of these were convicted and a few were hanged. A few of the most wanted SS men (like Franz Stangl, Commandant of Treblinka) escaped to Latin America, especially Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Most, however, went home, got jobs and went on to enjoy the benefits of the West German ecnomic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s.
Most of them tried to hide, change their names, and so on. However, some of them were caught, tried and hanged - for example, Josef Kramer, Irma Grese, Maria Mandel. (Some of the guards were transferred to Bergen-Belsen, where they were caught when the British Army liberated that camp. They were tried in September-November 1945 and hanged the following month).
Rudolf Hoess (not to be confused with Rudold Hess) - the first commandant of Auschwitz (May 1940-November 1943) was caught in March 1946. After giving evidence for the defence at Nuremberg he was handed over to the Poles, who tried him. He was convicted and hanged in April 1947 just inside Auschwitz I facing the notorious sign 'Arbeit macht frei'.
The guards job was to maintain control and order in the camp. This was usually done by fearing people and letting them know who was is charge. Guards worked on clocked shifts and made sure that no one was planning to escape or do anything reckless and stupid like planning to escape. Upon arrival, some of the guards will have dogs to create that fear and making them feel worthless.
