Moors is the Spanish name for Islamic people (mostly from northern Africa) who had invaded Spain in the 8th century. They have ruled south-eastern Spain for a few hundred years before losing their power to the kings of Aragon and Castile.

They were the craftsmen of Spain and taught Europeans to navigate, trade, and build boats. In the 15th century the Spanish turned on them and deported most of them to the countries of the Ottoman Empire.

the moors in spain were unitarian visigoths that had allied themselves with the vandals of northen africa to fight their counterpart trinitarian visigoths in spain.

There was no arabian or moorish invasion or conquest of spain, It was a civil war between feuding trinitarian visigoths and unitarian visigoths. The church used this invasion and conquest to instill fear into the population who had not accepted the trinitarian beliefs.

The Arabs were approximately 6000 miles away from Spain and nost of them had not converted to Islam. Most arabs were made up of different ethnic groups who were pagans and were feuding with each other. They had no reason to conquer or invade Spain. There were a handful of islamic profets throughout the mediterrenean trying to spread islam.

The unitarian visigoths had been feuding the trinitarian visigoths in spain over their arian beliefs. So they went to Morocco to gain support from the Vandals aka berbers in morocco. While in morocco they were exposed to Islam by some an islamic profect. Islam resembled the unitarian belief of God as one being and Jesus as a profet not a divine being in contrast to the trinitarian belief.

Think about this, it took 500 uears for the well equiped, discipline Roman army to conquer the entire Iberian Peninsula (spain). It took the various barbarians the suevis, the vandals. the visigoths approximately 300 years to conquer various parts of Spain. But amazingly it only took the arabs 3 and 1/2 years to conquered the entire Iberian Peninsula. The arabs, who were feuding and had no reason to conquer Spain. In fact. during the so called 800 years of the famous conquest most of the Iberian peninsula was unaware of such a conquest. The islamization of the iberian peninsula was a visigothic islamization not an arabic islamization.

The unitarian visigoths adopted islam as their religion and learned arabic but they were not arabs or moors. The moors were not in morocco during that time. The berbers. vandals, romans and byzantines were the people of morocco during that time.

These legends were used by different people during different time. The english and dutch used as part of their black legend to depict spain as a non-european country of vices and perversion. The church used it to instill fear and to show how spain had been punish for not accepting the trinitarian beliefs. The arabs used it to glorify themselves with such power. Others. used it to sell their books. theatrical plays. operas etc. Islamic spain was an accomplishment by the natives of spain and not by an invading foreign culture from 6000 miles away who had not reason to be there.

The term "Black Moor" is seen as relatively negative term. The proper way to refer to these people would be Black Berbers or Dark-Skinned Amazigh. These were Muslims who came from Africa with Black skin who led the Islamic conquest of Spain and then proceeded to govern Islamic Spain. They were generally evicted when the Christian Reconquest of Spain effectively "re-Christianized" the country.
