Governor Peter Stuyvesant signed the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam over to the English in 1664. Other well-known names include: Giovanni da Verrazano, who in 1524 was the first European to see New York. (The infamous Verrazano Narrows Bridge was named for him.) Thomas Dongan, 2nd Earl of Limerick (Ireland) was the Provincial Governor of New York, and is credited with calling the first representative legislature in New York. Governor William Cosby was accused of maladministration, sued his accuser for libel in 1735. He lost, setting the legal precedent that criticism is not libel. Today, this precedent still stands in our constitutional right to free speech. John Jay, born in 1745, became the first Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. Alexander Hamilton, born in 1755 in the Caribbean, attended King's College (now called Columbia University) in Manhattan. He was an active legal mind, the first US Secretary of the Treasury, and later author of the Federalist Papers. Joseph Brant was a powerful Mohawk Chief who aided the British in the French and Indian War, continuing to side with the British during the American Revolution, even attaining a Captaincy in the British Army. He attended Moors Charity School, which later became Dartmouth College. Brant was a member of the Freemasons, an organization which greatly influenced both sides in the American Revolution. On a trip to England in 1785 Brant notably declined to bow to the King, saying "I bow to no man for I am considered a prince among my own people. But I will gladly shake your hand." That rebuff was tempered by his willingness to kiss the Queen's hand. Thomas Willet was present when the Dutch signed over New Amsterdam to the English and was an arbiter in ongoing troubles between the two groups. He became New York's first Mayor. Thomas Willet's grandson, Marinus Willet was a successful trader and informal leader of the Sons of Liberty in New York City. Like his grandfather, he also later became Mayor.
