The United States Army led by General Zachary Taylor won the Battle of Buena Vista over the Mexican Army led by Santa Ana. If a coup d'état had not occurred in Mexico City and Santa Ana had not left the area to reclaim the Presidency, the Mexicans may have prevailed the next day. Instead, the Mexicans abandoned the field.
