Ray Charles didn't write "Georgia on My Mind". Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell wrote the original in 1930 about Hoagy's sister Georgia Carmichael. Ray's is just a cover, sending him in a new direction. He picked the track as a way of showing his forgiveness for the way his home state used to lynch black people, and in 1979, Georgia made the track their state song, which almost looks like an apology for their actions, and to show they've grown up.
Michael Bolton covered Georgia on my Mind, originally sung by Ray Charles.
