First of all, there are two types of Diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes (also known as juvenile diabetes) usually hits people under 20, but can hit people of all ages. It is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of the Pancreas Beta Cells. It is independent from diet and obesity.
Type 2 Diabetes (also known as adult onset diabetes) is more frequently found in adults. It is characterized by a resistance to insulin, and can often be controlled by diet and drugs that inhibit the sugar load on your body. If insulin dependent, it may require some very high doses of insulin.
Type 2 diabetes is associated with diet, exercise, and obesity. However, as with many disease, the chances of acquiring the disease is probabilistic. A good diet, exercise, and keeping thin might lower one's chances of acquiring the disease, but you may have a genetic predisposition, or just bad luck.
Likewise, non-smokers can acquire lung cancer, seemingly without risk factors. But the likelihood of acquiring the disease is lower than with smokers.
There are a few ways a person can reverse the process of diabetes. You can eat healthy and you can exercise. If you get to your diabetes before it gets too severe you can reverse the effect it is having on your body.
I know there is a procedure available for type 1 diabetes that works for 2-3 years (animal transplant that eventually gets rejected by the human immune system) but does it work with type 2 diabetes?
