when you oil gets hot it tends to thin out. Say your using 5w-30 and when the engine gets warm it knocks it means either the oil is to thin or oil is not getting to that component. next oil chenge try using the lucas oil stablizer and see what it does. It should solve the problem but remember lucas oil oil stablizer takes the place of one quart of oil.

I think you are talking about "hot tanking" which is a method used to clean the block out, once disassembled.
No more then 0.060 and then it starts trying to RUN HOT on you.
If it's a engine knock it could be low on coolant or have head damage...

later model 350's run thermostats around 195 degrees, but older 350's didn't run that hot of a thermostat. I've seen them as low as 160 to 180 degrees on older 350's.
