The First to use the name were the Romans, From their point of view Africa covered Tunisia and the most northern parts of Algeria and Libya. They may have gotten the idea for the name from from one of the peoples they met on the Continent, The Afri, They were a Berber tribe in the Carthage area.

Africa was called "The Dark Continent" simply because so little was known about it up until fairly recently. Especially, sub-Saharan Africa was a mystery to Europeans who referred to it as the Dark Continent as an inducement for exploration. Unfortunately, quickly on the heels of that exploration came colonial rule and the exploitation of the land and its resources, particularly its people.
