Bad coughing is a very muscle-intensive action. The pressure of the cough reflex compressing one side of the body can overextend (i.e. micro-tear) the opposite side, which then may sieze up to try to maintain its integrity. The above is true, but to put it in more simple terms a bad cough can also cause sore stomach muscles and ribs, so see your doctor and get a cough medicine to stop the deep coughing. You also need chest/lung x-rays to find out why you are coughing so much.

I was also in a car accident 4 months ago and have had increasing pain to my neck, left shoulder and arm. Just got results of an mri back which indicate neural foraminal stenosis. The mri doesn't show any nerve impingement, but my family doctor says my symptoms indicate it and is referring me to a neurosurgeon. Looking forward to getting the opinion of the neurologist as I am already tired of the symptoms and pain. It's hard to even use my left arm. I think you should find another neurologist. We are the best judge of what is going on with our bodies and sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right Doc. Don't give up and good luck!

Most of the time when you cough you bring your hand to your mouth to cover it and you bend forward slightly, depending on the size of the cough, meaning the muscles in your lower back would need to be used and that could cause pain.

Because some of the muscles you use when coughing are located in the back and sides.
