Social networking sites often begin with no revenue to speak of, and as they gain users they can market advertising space. The "free" nature of their service is obviosuly attractive to the public, which in turn means large numbers of people may end up using the site. Eventually, ad space becomes attractive to companies and the venture becomes profitable.
