Because of the presence of Indus River.

The name came from the Persians in ancient times describing people from the Indus Valley, it somehow got evolved into India (there is a big long article about it on Wikipedia).

Native Americans however are NOT from the Indus region.

India is country of Great Spiritual Teachers.

The question should be, Why India became spiritual country?

As we know, that there are millions of questions on our material existence.

I don't know what year? and how long ago... but there were spiritual teachers who were concerned about the same question for existence.

As of today, lots of Gurus in western culture and Easter culture, as well in so many religions explained that a true nature of life should be spiritual. Because, we are spirit exist in material body, and experience the life through our mind and body.

As Western Culture, pursue happiness by satisfying their material needs, same way in India, happiness pursued in inner world of mind, by understanding own mind of existence, which is not material yet thing that you can touch and feel. But the power exist in our mind to create and destroy.

If one tries to interpret such existence, one will end up being spiritual teacher or guru. I guess that's reason why India spiritual country.

I hope this helps.

Love, Light and Peace.

India is a nation of a billion people and home for many religions. The Hindu religion, which dominates the nation has many gods to whom Indians pray to. India also has many Muslims. They pray anywhere from 5 to 7 times a day. There are several other Eastern religions in India. The result is allot of "praying" and thus India is the land of prayers.

India is called the land of prayer probably because of the ancient civilizations that believed in a God that was beyond name and form. Prayer in India has evolved from the Sanatana Dharma, which believes that God is everywhere, in everything. In ancient India, Indians used to pray to the sun, the wind, to the God of death because they realized that God is in everything, everywhere. Then that prayer evolved to praying to a God in a form; to a God in every region, to a God in every family. In India prayer is given a lot of importance, but today prayer is important everywhere in the world. America too can be called as a land of prayer because more people in America go to church, more people are devoted to the day called the day of prayer or Sunday than in India. Therefore, today, world prayer is a global subject.
