becasue woodwrow Wilson did not believe it would help the USA if it was to join the league of nations. Its questionable however that woodwrow was out to fool the world because he made the majority of the policies, this was never prooved but what other reason would they not join something they helped create.
the republicians opposed him, and wilson had stroke and had to halt his campaign for the league
The big reason was public opinion. Republican Warren Harding won the 1920 election with the slogan, "Return to Normalcy" which implied a return to the pre-war days before Wilson, as well as the isolation of the US from European conflicts. that the League of Nations could draw it into. US president Woodrow Wilson went in person to the Versailles Peace Conference, and spent months there, absent from the US, during which he advocated for his "Fourteen Points", which included a League of Nations.
Wilson, a Democrat, had been re-elected in 1916, campaigning on the slogan "He kept us out of the war"and then shortly afterward asked for a declaration of war, so many people felt betrayed and lost faith in Democrat promises. In short, the majority of the people were tired of war and US intervention into European affairs and wanted an isolationist foreign policy which precluded participation in the League of Nations. Harding had a virtual mandate to keep the US out of the League of Nations.

united nations if after WWII but if after WWI its the league of nations. but the US didn't join the league of nations because they tried isolationism which is to isolate the country from foreign affairs and that was the league of nations. the US did join the united nations though
