Ultraviolet light causes mutation. UV light is of higher energy than visual light and this is enough energy to cause damage in the DNA of microorganisms or even animal cells. UV light is what causes sunburns. The cells of the skin usually die due to damage to its DNA and peel off just as microorganisms die.

UV radiation is responsible of lesions in bacteria and eukaryote cells, by at least two different means :

- alteration of genetic code, preventing reproduction or leading to cancer

- alteration of cell's constituents like the membrane, the enzymes... resulting in perturbations of metabolism wich can be fatal.
