Firstly, AC is not always used for transmission rather than DC, DC transmission is becoming a frequently useful form of transmission and has several advantages in certain circumstances. Though the reason AC is used more than DC is as follows:

Firstly, the output of power stations comes from a rotary turbine, which by it's nature is AC and therefore requires no power electronics to convert to DC.

Secondly it is much easier to change the voltage of AC electricity for transmission and distribution.

thirdly the cost of plant associated with AC transmission (circuit breakers, Transformers etc) is much lower than the equivalent of DC transmission

AC transmission provides a number of technical advantages. When a fault on the network occurs, a large fault current occurs. In an AC system this becomes much easier to interrupt, as the sine wave current will naturally tend to zero at some point making the current easier to interrupt.

It is also easier to meter AC connections, to monitor power flows accross a network.

DC transmission however, is used to link two completely different AC systems. An AC link would require the two systems to be entirely in sync, with the peaks and troughs of the AC wave to occur at the same time. With a DC transmission link, this can be negated allowing the link of, for example, the UK and European transmission network. (See National Grid website for information on the HVDC England - France connector)

We can make a d.c transmission plant like a.c because we can't get uninterrupted power supply like a.c .after a certain time d.c source (battery) need charge for recharging it self .

Which is more useful ac or dc current?

both. it depends on the application.

Do step up and down transformer only work with ac power or can you use them in dc only?

AC only. That's one of many reasons why AC is more useful (and more widely used!) than DC.

Which is more useful ac aor dc?

AC and DC current both have useful advantages, depending on what you what to do with it.AC is more useful for sending long distance over transmission lines, as AC can be put through a transformer to change the voltage easily. All electronic devices work using DC only. Batteries provide DC and are readily available or can be created. All electronic devices, when used on a domestic AC supply, have their power converted from AC to DC, either within the device or an external power supply.More devices use DC than AC, but we could not get the power to where it is needed without AC transmission lines. Heavy motors were more efficient when constructed for AC supplies, but these days DC stepper motors are taking over, using electronic control circuits.

Why is AC better than DC?

AC power can be transmitted more efficiently than DC.

Which is more effecient an ac motor or a dc motor?

ac

Why do you study dc analysis first before ac analysis?

We do study DC Analysis first before AC Analysis for the sake of simplicity, for pedagogic reasons, and also for historic reasons. As useful and as easy to understand as DC is, it serves as a preparatory ladder in studying the more complex behavior of AC. In addition, it is to respect the historical sequence of events since DC sources were first discovered before the AC sources.

Why ac is more effective than DC?

because power dissipated in ac is less than power dissipated in dc.

who is more efficient dc motor or ac motor and why?

DC motors are generally more efficient than AC motors. DC motors have a lower amount of inertial associated with them, making them more efficient to run.
