Christians tend to be divided into two or three main groups when it comes to the matter of homosexuality.

On the one hand, there are numerous references to the depravity of those who practice sodomy (which is what homosexuality is). These are found in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19, whilst the act of homosexuality is expressly forbidden in Leviticus 18:22. The Apostle Paul delivers several condemning passages on the practice of homosexuality (e.g. Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6). Bible-believing Christians who wish to honour the word of God cannot reconcile any tolerance of what they understand to be a blatant sin. Paul also gave very clear instructions in his letters about the qualities of church leaders (1 Timothy 3:12) and these did not include engaging in homosexual practices.

On the other hand, Christians also wish to follow the example of their Lord. Jesus Christ did not condemn people for their sin if they repented (e.g. the criminal on the cross next to him; the woman caught in adultery). Christ did not turn away those who were caught in sin, but invited them to repent. Many Christians believe that, only through opening their hearts to people lured by homosexuality (and other sins), might these people see their need to turn aside from their sin and come to know Jesus. This group believes there is no hope for anyone caught in sin if no-one reaches out to them.

There tends to be a third group among Christians as well: those who feel that the Bible is not actually the inspired word of God, but merely a compilation of interesting stories and interpretations of guidelines which are no longer relevant to modern life. This group is perhaps the most damaging to the essence of Christianity, as they hold a very liberal view that "anything goes because God always forgives". These are the ones who believe that practising homosexuals should be permitted to be pastors and elders in the congregation.

What is the difference between thoughts of homosexuality and thoughts of murder?

First of all, murder is a serious crime, while in most western jurisdictions, homosexuality is not. Although some religions regard homosexuality as a sin, it is a victimless sin, unlike murder. So, thinking of homosexuality may be natural for some, but thinking of murder never should be.
