Why are Farms in Zimbabwe unsuccessful?

The land redistribution 'program' took land, often by force, from white farmers and redistributed to black farmers which has led to the near collapse of the agriculture in Zimbabwe. The problem was two fold: black farmers lacked expertise both in technique and in the business aspects of getting crops to market and they also lacked the capital to run their new farms effectively. The inability to sell crops abroad kept income low and prevented maintenance on what equipment had survived the take over.

At present the government of Zimbabwe is trying to lure white farmers back in order to reestablish the agriculture industry. In the meantime, many in Zimbabwe have been forced to take up gardening their own food.
